Istanbul Sights, Sounds and Hotels

It is believed that even before the Genoese settled in the Galata Neighborhood during the 13th century, approved by Eastern Roman Emperor Michael VIII Palaelogus, that they established their community on the earliest foundations of the city. Located north of the Peninsula and Golden Horn on a precipitous knot of land, this once thriving district attracted merchants from all parts of Europe. A conglomerate of hardware and plumbing merchants occupy the area now, although one can enjoy the attractive public square and delightful outdoor tea gardens at the base of Galata Tower, and admire the surrounding revitalised architecture. The Galata Tower, dating back to the 5th century, has played many roles, including those of jail and of dormitory, but the tower you see in Galata today was built by the Genoese during the 14th century.

You will have to spend a sufficient amount of time in Istanbul to discover all the interesting nooks and crannies. On a visit to Istanbul's Galata tower you should stroll around the neighbourhood and see what peculiar spots and paraphernalia you find. The excellent Istanbul hotels are perfect for when you would just like to relax and soak up the glorious atmosphere.
